More on my MADDER LAKE ALCHEMY EXPERIMENT....
After 4days, there is a definate change happening to the water.
There was a slight scum, perhaps the start of fermentation? Which I have read is not a problem and can perhaps help with the process. I think the discard water is getting less brown. There is pink staining on the container and the floating bits have finally sunk.
The final wash will be with demineralised water. (In period rain water or pure well water would have been used. But today even our rain water is tainted so demineralised or distilled would be the closest to then.)
I chose to use tap water for this part of the process as it used so much water and I don't believe it will have a negative effect on the process.
I will use demineralised water for further steps as I don't want to risk tap water interfering with any of any chemical reactions.
Note: My preference for water would have been distilled but I couldn't find any available to buy.
I might look into the process of making my own.
I soaked overnight. In the mornings I used a turkey baster to remove the water being careful not to remove any of the root as most of it was almost powder like. This may mean extra soaking/washing time?

Previous photos of process:
Dry madder lake roots 100gms
Added water to 'wash' the root before the dye extraction part of the process.
Soak overnight
Noting that some roots are floating. They eventually sunk after 4 days of the washing process
