Someone suggested I put up a couple of blogs about it so here goes.
I wanted to try egg tempera on a rabbitskin glue gessoed box.
And I was looking for a way to incomparate it to fit with the Kingdom competition.
I decided to use a Russian manuscript (to fit the theme: Eastern Europe.
It is a beautiful and intricate image that I broke in pieces (not literally) and put on different parts of the box (front, top and sides).
I found it interesting that the manuscript was still being used as a model book, 500yrs after its creation.
Here is part of the information that I included in my documentation about the manuscript.
T'OROS ROSLIN
GOSPELS
This manuscript was made in 1262 by an extremely prominent illuminator, T'oros Roslin (Armenian, active 1256-1268),who extended the range of manuscript illuminations by introducing a whole cycle of images into the gospels, rather than, as was traditional, only including the portraits of the evangelists.
This particular manuscript was created at the scriptorium Hromkla, which became the leading artistic centre of Armenian Cilicia under the rule of catholic Constantine (1221-1267)
As an extensive colophon stating on fol. 406v explains, T'oros created this manuscript under commision from the nephew of Constantine,a priest also known as T'oros.
It is one of seven known manuscripts bearing T'oros Roslin signature. , and is the most sumptuous of them all, with 15 miniatures and 67 smaller illustrations.
The style of the images suggest that T'oros had several assistants help with the illuminations. , though the overall quality remains extremely high.
Even in the seventeenth century, 500yrs after it was made, its illuminations served as a model for Armenian scribes.
The manuscript was long cherished within the Armenian church.
